Korean gunghap —
eight characters, not just your animal

Compatibility · · 8 min read

In short

Gunghap (궁합) is the Korean custom of reading two saju charts side by side: whether the Day Masters form a stem combination, whether the day branches or animals form harmony, clash or wonjin, and whether each chart fills the other’s missing elements. A bad result is not a breakup verdict but a map of where you are likely to rub.

What is gunghap, and why do Koreans check it before marriage?

Answer
Gunghap (궁합, 宮合) is the Korean custom of laying two people's saju charts side by side and reading how their characters relate. Many Koreans still check it before a wedding, some for fun and some as a reference point.
It works less like a verdict and more like a preview of where a couple clicks and where they are likely to rub.

Its roots are in the old wedding procedure. Once a match was under discussion, the groom's family sent his four pillars to the bride's family, written out as a saju-danja (사주단자, 四柱單子). The bride's family then chose the wedding date and sent it back, a step called yeongil (연길, 涓吉). With the charts already traveling between the two houses, checking how they fit was a natural next step.

Few families follow that procedure today, but the word stayed: a relative may quietly get a reading before the families meet, or friends ask about a partner at a saju cafe. Gunghap comes up often when Korean dramas turn to marriage, too. Think of it as a cultural checkpoint before a big life step, not a ruling on whether a relationship is allowed.

What's the difference between zodiac (tti) gunghap and full saju gunghap?

Zodiac gunghap reads one character out of eight; saju gunghap reads all eight. Your tti (띠), the Korean word for your zodiac animal, is simply the earthly branch of your birth year. That makes zodiac gunghap quick, but everyone born in the same year gets the same answer.

One catch: the saju year turns at Ipchun (입춘, 立春) in early February, not on 1 January, so a January baby may belong to the previous year's animal. No birth time? Three pillars and six characters still work, just more broadly. Knowing each chart's spread first helps, as in reading your five-element balance.

How are the Day Master and day branch compared?

Answer
Saju gunghap centers on the two day pillars. The two Day Masters (ilgan, 日干) are checked for a heavenly-stem combination and for how their elements feed or check each other, and the two day branches (ilji, 日支) are checked for harmony, clash and wonjin.
The Day Master is the character that stands for you; the day branch sits directly beneath it.

As covered in the Day Master and the ten heavenly stems, your Day Master is the character that represents you. When two Day Masters form a stem combination (cheongan-hap, 천간합), tradition reads them as a pair that draws together. The classic images help: 甲 and 己 are a tall tree and field soil, 乙 and 庚 a vine and raw ore, 丙 and 辛 the sun and a jewel, 丁 and 壬 a candle and the sea, 戊 and 癸 a mountain and rain.

Many readers treat the day branch as the seat of close relationships, so that is where they look for yukhap (육합, six harmonies), chung (충, clash) and wonjin (원진). Apply the same table to the two year branches and you have zodiac gunghap.

No stem combination doesn't mean no match. Wood feeding fire reads as one lifting the other, metal checking wood as sharpening each other, and the same element as friendship. Then look at the whole chart: does an element that runs thin in one of you run full in the other?

What is wonjin, and why does Korean gunghap mention it so much?

Answer
Wonjin (원진, 怨嗔) is a branch relationship read as attraction mixed with small, accumulating irritations, and it covers six pairs: Rat-Goat, Ox-Horse, Tiger-Rooster, Rabbit-Monkey, Dragon-Pig and Snake-Dog. In Korean zodiac gunghap it comes up almost as often as clash.
People also call it wonjin-sal, but read it as a nudge to look after tone and small feelings, not a signal to split up.

Here's an easy way to remember the pairs. Arrange the twelve animals in a circle like a clock face. The animal straight across from yours is your clash, and your wonjin is the animal right next to that opposite point. The Rat's opposite is the Horse, and the Goat beside the Horse is the Rat's wonjin. So wonjin is off-angle rather than head-on: rarely a big fight, often a small snag.

Why so often in Korea? Emphasis. Korean zodiac charts name wonjin alongside clash as a matter of course. Chinese-speaking marriage matching (hehun, 合婚) more often turns to the six clashes and six harms (六沖, 六害), and Japanese compatibility reading (aisho-uranai, 相性占い) commonly compares two kyusei-kigaku stars by element. Rat-Goat and Ox-Horse are also harm pairs, so one couple may hear wonjin in Seoul and liuhai in Taipei. No version is the correct one; each tradition watches a different relationship within the same twelve branches.

A wonjin result is nothing to worry about. Your animal is one character out of eight, and a harmony between day branches or a stem combination shares the weight. Wonjin is easy to handle with one small agreement, like saying what bothered you on the same day.

If our gunghap comes out bad, should we break up?

No. A gunghap is not a report card for the relationship; it is closer to a map of where you are likely to bump into each other. Whether you read a result as ‘so it won't work’ or ‘so here's how we'll handle it’ is up to the two of you.

If a reader tells one partner to simply give way, that is usually the reader's view, not the characters'. What keeps a relationship going is the conversation, not the chart.

What should I ask at a saju cafe for a gunghap reading?

Bring both birth dates, birth times and birth cities, and ask where you can meet halfway rather than whether you are good or bad together. Seoul has saju cafes near universities and busy streets; language support varies by shop. For how a visit goes, see fortune-telling culture in Korea.

Do people check gunghap for friends or coworkers too?

Yes. In Korea gunghap isn't only a marriage word; it's used for how any two people fit when they do something together. Checking it before going into business with someone, or with a best friend for fun, is nothing unusual.

The weight shifts, though. Couple gunghap starts from close seats like the Day Master and day branch, while friends and coworkers care more about working rhythm and roles, so reading the team through the animals' trios and clashes fits better. For days side by side on a trip, travel companion fit shows how to work harmony, trio and clash into an itinerary.

It all gets easier with your own charts open. With 5htrip you can look through your chart, including your Day Master and five-element spread, in five languages, and viewing it is free. Two charts side by side is a fine way to start talking.

Frequently asked

Are two people with the same zodiac animal compatible?

The animal alone is neither harmony, clash nor wonjin. With a shared animal, the Day Master and day branch are where the real reading starts.

Do I need my exact birth time for a gunghap reading?

No. Three pillars and six characters still include the Day Master and day branch. The reading just gets broader.

Does a stem combination between Day Masters guarantee a good match?

No. A stem combination is one sign of attraction; the day branches and element balance complete the picture.

Can a non-Korean couple get a Korean gunghap reading?

Yes. The rules are the same wherever you were born; just share both birth cities so the hour pillars come out right.
