2027, the Year of the Fire Goat —
how your zodiac animal meets the Goat

Zodiac · · 8 min read

In short

2027 is the Jeongmi (정미, 丁未) year: yin fire over yin earth, popularly the Fire Goat or Red Sheep. In saju it starts at Ipchun, 4 February 2027. The Horse pairs with the Goat, Pig and Rabbit share its trio, the Ox clashes, the Dog breaks and punishes, the Rat harms, and Goat-born people meet their own year. In Korean custom, Pig, Rabbit and Goat are in their leaving year of samjae.

What kind of year is 2027, the Jeongmi (丁未) year?

Answer
2027 is the Jeongmi (정미, 丁未) year of the sixty-year cycle: the heavenly stem 丁 is yin fire and the earthly branch 未 is yin earth and the Goat, which is why it is called the Year of the Fire Goat, or the Red Goat.
The previous Jeongmi year was 1967 and the next one is 2087, because the same stem-and-branch pair returns once every sixty years.

Every year carries two characters: a heavenly stem (cheongan, 천간), one of ten, over an earthly branch (jiji, 지지), one of twelve. The branch is where the zodiac animal lives, and the pairs cycle through sixty.

In 2027 the stem is 丁 (jeong), yin fire. Fire maps to red in the five-element system, which is where the red in Red Goat comes from. The branch is 未 (mi), the eighth of the twelve branches: the Goat, and in element terms, yin earth.

The two characters fit together neatly. In the generating cycle of the five elements fire feeds earth, so in 2027 the fire on top feeds the earth below. And the branch 未 is said to hold hidden stems (jijanggan, 지장간) inside it, 丁, 乙 and 己, so 丁 shows up both on the surface and inside the branch.

The traditional image for 丁 is a candle or a lamp. Not the sun (that is 丙, the stem of 2026), but a small flame that lights what is close at hand. Treat that as a picture of the characters, not a forecast for anyone's life.

When does the Year of the Fire Goat actually start?

Answer
In saju, the Fire Goat year starts at Ipchun (입춘, 立春), the Start of Spring solar term, on 4 February 2027, not on 1 January and not on Lunar New Year.
From 1 January to 3 February 2027 it is still the Byeongo (丙午) year, the Year of the Horse.

It is a basic rule of the Korean manseryeok (만세력), the table used to look up pillars: the year turns at Ipchun and each month at a solar term. Everyday conversation may switch animals at New Year, but a chart uses Ipchun.

So a baby born in January 2027 has a Horse year pillar. And if your own birthday falls in January or early February, check your animal against Ipchun before reading anything below.

The 2027 solar terms and son-eomneun-nal days are listed in best days to visit Korea in 2027.

How does each of the twelve zodiac animals relate to the Goat?

Put the 2027 branch 未 next to your own year branch, your zodiac animal, and traditional rules give the pair a name. Yukhap (육합, six harmonies) and samhap (삼합, the trio) are the easy-fit relations. Chung (충, clash), hyeong (형, punishment), pa (파, break), hae (해, harm) and wonjin (원진, resentment) are the out-of-step ones. Bonmyeongnyeon (본명년) is your own year coming round. Five animals have no special relation to the Goat at all.

AnimalBranchRelation to 未A gentle reading
RatJa 子Hae (harm) and wonjinEasily out of rhythm. Confirm plans one extra time.
OxChuk 丑Chung (clash, 丑未), part of the 丑戌未 hyeongThe opposite branch. Read as a year of movement; leave slack in your schedule.
TigerIn 寅No special relationYour own chart matters more.
RabbitMyo 卯Samhap (亥卯未)Same trio as the Goat. In Korean custom, also a samjae leaving year.
DragonJin 辰No special relationNeutral on this count.
SnakeSa 巳No special relationNeutral; your ten-year cycle says more.
HorseO 午Yukhap (午未)A matched pair. The Horse year itself runs until 3 February 2027.
GoatMi 未Bonmyeongnyeon (your own year)Your branch doubled, traditionally a year for tidying up more than launching. Also a samjae leaving year.
MonkeySin 申No special relationNeutral; check your day and month branches.
RoosterYu 酉No special relationNeutral; whole-chart balance is the measure.
DogSul 戌Pa (break, 未戌) and part of the 丑戌未 hyeongSmall frictions. Double-check paperwork and dates.
PigHae 亥Samhap (亥卯未)Same trio as the Goat. Like the Rabbit, also a samjae leaving year.

The interesting rows are Pig and Rabbit. By samhap they belong to the same trio as the Goat, and by Korean samjae that very trio is the one going through samjae. Two rules, two labels, and neither is wrong.

Wonjin is a word you will hear a lot in Korean gunghap (궁합), compatibility reading. It is usually applied between two people's animals, but the same rule can be laid between the year's branch and yours. How harmony, clash and wonjin work between two charts is covered in Korean gunghap compatibility.

Chinese-speaking readers will know the parallel fan tai sui (犯太歲) list. For 2027 it is commonly given as the Goat (zhi tai sui, its own year), the Ox (chong, clash), the Dog (xing, punishment, with some including the Ox here too), the Rat (hai, harm) and the Dog again (po, break). It comes from the same branch relations.

What is samjae, and who is in it in 2027?

Answer
In 2027, samjae applies only to the Pig, the Rabbit and the Goat, and 2027 is their nal-samjae, the third and leaving year.
For the 亥卯未 trio, samjae falls in the 巳, 午 and 未 years: 2025 was the entering year, 2026 the staying year, and 2027 the leaving year. The other nine animals are not in samjae in 2027.

Samjae (삼재, 三災, three calamities) is a Korean folk custom. It groups the twelve animals into the four samhap trios and gives each trio a fixed three-year window in which to take a little extra care. The three years have names: deul-samjae (들삼재), the entering year; nul-samjae (눌삼재), the staying year; and nal-samjae (날삼재), the leaving year.

Animal trioSamjae falls in the years of2027
Monkey, Rat, Dragon (申子辰)寅, 卯, 辰Not in samjae
Tiger, Horse, Dog (寅午戌)申, 酉, 戌Not in samjae
Snake, Rooster, Ox (巳酉丑)亥, 子, 丑Not in samjae
Pig, Rabbit, Goat (亥卯未)巳, 午, 未Nal-samjae (2025 entering, 2026 staying, 2027 leaving)

Many Koreans read the leaving year as a time to finish things rather than start a pile of new ones. Samjae also counts its years from Ipchun, so until 3 February 2027 you are technically still in the tail of the staying year.

None of this is a reason to worry. Samjae looks at one character, your animal, out of eight, and two people with the same animal can have very different charts. Use it as a nudge to double-check before big decisions.

Is a clash year a bad year?

No. Your zodiac animal is a single character, the year branch, in an eight-character chart, so one clash does not decide a year. The 2027 branch 未 also interacts with your month branch, your day branch and your hour branch, and on top of that runs your daeun (대운), the ten-year cycle that is different for everyone. An Ox-born person has the 丑未 clash on the year branch, yet may have a day branch that harmonizes with 未.

A quick tip for reading your own chart: a Korean manseryeok usually writes the pillars right to left as year, month, day, hour, with stems on the top row and branches on the bottom. So the bottom-right character is your zodiac branch. The rest of the layout is walked through in how to read a saju chart.

How can I use 2027 for a Korea trip or big plans?

Use the zodiac relations to decide where to leave slack, not to decide what you are forbidden to do. This order keeps it simple.

On 5htrip you can look through your own chart, including your Day Master and how the five elements are spread across it, in five languages, and viewing your chart is free. Meet 2027 with all eight characters, not just one.

Frequently asked

What zodiac sign is a baby born in January 2027?

A Horse, in saju. The Goat year only starts at Ipchun on 4 February 2027.

Is 2027 the Year of the Goat or the Year of the Sheep?

Same thing. Goat, Sheep and Ram all translate the same branch, 未, and Korean yang covers both.

Is 2027 special for people born in 1967?

Yes. The same Jeongmi pair returns after sixty years, which Koreans mark as hwangap. That applies if you were born after Ipchun in 1967.

Can I still travel to Korea if I am in samjae?

Of course. Samjae is a reminder, not a ban. Build in a little extra time and enjoy the trip.
