Yeokma by zodiac sign in 2027,
all twelve laid out
Yeokma direction is set by your samhap group, so it is fixed per zodiac animal and does not move when the year turns. What changes in 2027 is the samsal direction, which sits in the west — and animals whose yeokma is southwest or northwest share a little of that side.
Which way does my yeokma point in 2027?
People often ask where their yeokma is "this year", but the question needs adjusting. Yeokma isn't a value that rotates annually; it's attached to your animal. It comes from samhap (삼합), the grouping of the twelve branches into fours sets of three, and those sets never change.
What yeokma is, and why the ominous-sounding sal gets tacked onto it, is covered in what yeokma means. This piece does one job: work through all twelve animals under the specific conditions of 2027, the jeong-mi year (丁未).
What do all twelve animals look like side by side?
Here is the full set. The last column shows whether that animal's yeokma shares a directional component with west, which is the samsal direction for 2027.
| Animal | Branch | Samhap group | Yeokma branch | Direction | Shares west in 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rat | Ja 子 | Water, Sin-Ja-Jin | In 寅 | Northeast | No |
| Ox | Chuk 丑 | Metal, Sa-Yu-Chuk | Hae 亥 | Northwest | Yes, partly |
| Tiger | In 寅 | Fire, In-O-Sul | Sin 申 | Southwest | Yes, partly |
| Rabbit | Myo 卯 | Wood, Hae-Myo-Mi | Sa 巳 | Southeast | No |
| Dragon | Jin 辰 | Water, Sin-Ja-Jin | In 寅 | Northeast | No |
| Snake | Sa 巳 | Metal, Sa-Yu-Chuk | Hae 亥 | Northwest | Yes, partly |
| Horse | O 午 | Fire, In-O-Sul | Sin 申 | Southwest | Yes, partly |
| Goat | Mi 未 | Wood, Hae-Myo-Mi | Sa 巳 | Southeast | No |
| Monkey | Sin 申 | Water, Sin-Ja-Jin | In 寅 | Northeast | No |
| Rooster | Yu 酉 | Metal, Sa-Yu-Chuk | Hae 亥 | Northwest | Yes, partly |
| Dog | Sul 戌 | Fire, In-O-Sul | Sin 申 | Southwest | Yes, partly |
| Pig | Hae 亥 | Wood, Hae-Myo-Mi | Sa 巳 | Southeast | No |
The table makes the shape obvious. There are only four yeokma directions, and three animals share each one. Rat, Dragon and Monkey all point northeast. That is what "set by samhap group" actually means in practice.
Going by your animal alone reads the year branch, one of four pillars, so it's a rough check. Reading from the day branch — the branch of the day you were born — is also widely used, and a precise answer means laying out all four pillars.
If yeokma is fixed, what actually changes each year?
What changes each year is the samsal direction. 2027 is a jeong-mi year, and because Mi (未) belongs to the Hae-Myo-Mi group, the samsal direction is west. The daejanggun direction is east.
| What | Set by | 2026 byeong-o | 2027 jeong-mi |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yeokma | Your own samhap group | Fixed per animal | Fixed per animal (unchanged) |
| Samsalbang | Samhap group of the year branch | North | West |
| Daejanggunbang | Moves one seat every three years | East | East |
So the split is clean. Yeokma is a direction attached to you; samsalbang and daejanggunbang are directions the year hands to everybody alike. Sometimes they overlap, sometimes they don't. The rules behind them are laid out in samsalbang and daejanggunbang in 2027.
What should I do if my yeokma overlaps west in 2027?
There's a solid reason not to worry about it. Samsalbang was never a no-travel direction. It marked the side people avoided for moving house and breaking ground — the sort of thing that's hard to undo. A trip of a few days doesn't really fall into that category.
If you're one of the overlapping animals, this much is plenty.
- Leave slack in the daysFewer stops per day, more time between them.
- Break the long legs upInstead of one long haul, put a stopover in the middle.
- Move big decisions off that stretchDon't sign a contract or make a major call in the middle of that leg.
- Keep the day after you land clearDon't schedule anything that matters for the morning after you get back.
An overlap is a signal to slow down a little. It is not a signal to cancel.
Why is 2027 special for Pig, Rabbit and Goat?
2027 is a Mi year, and Pig, Rabbit and Goat are exactly the Hae-Myo-Mi group. The year's own branch lands inside their samhap set. That happens three times in every twelve years, and 2027 is one of them.
These three also point southeast (Sa 巳), so they don't overlap with 2027's west at all. On directional grounds alone, this is an easy year for them to move in. The Goat is the one nuance: sharing a branch with the year makes it their own zodiac year, and one traditional reading treats that as a year for consolidating rather than expanding.
Even inside one samhap group the three animals aren't identical. The reading shifts with the balance of the whole chart, so it's best not to settle a whole year on the strength of one animal.
What if I'm travelling in January or early February?
In saju the year turns at ipchun, not on 1 January, and ipchun in 2027 falls on 4 February. So from 1 January to 3 February 2027, the year is still read as byeong-o (丙午).
That matters in two ways.
- If you were born in that window — someone born in January 2027 is a Horse, not a Goat, and takes the Horse's southwest yeokma.
- If you travel in that window — the year is still byeong-o, so the samsal direction is north rather than west. Daejanggunbang is east in both years, so it stays put.
One last thing. Northeast or southwest, a yeokma direction is an angle measured from where you start. Seoul sits west-northwest of Tokyo but north-northeast of Taipei and Singapore, so the same destination lands in completely different directions depending on your departure city. Which way Seoul sits from yours is worked out with real bearings in which way is Seoul from your city, and the basics of reading a bearing are in how to choose a travel direction.
One thing to do today: find your own row in the table above and remember the direction. The rest can wait until you're picking a date to head that way.

Does my yeokma direction change in 2027?
No. Yeokma is set by samhap group, so it's fixed per animal. It's samsalbang and daejanggunbang that move each year.
Which zodiac signs overlap the samsal direction in 2027?
Tiger, Horse and Dog (southwest) and Snake, Rooster and Ox (northwest). Nothing to cancel over — just leave more slack and break long legs up.
What does a Goat year mean for Pig, Rabbit and Goat?
Mi (未) is their own Hae-Myo-Mi group, so the year's branch lands inside their set. Their yeokma is southeast, which doesn't overlap west either.
Which year applies if I travel or was born in January 2027?
Still byeong-o. Ipchun 2027 is 4 February, so before that you're a Horse, and the samsal direction is north, not west.
